Welcome back to the latest edition of the Humber Spotlight. I am proud to be part of the panel at the Bondholder Breakfast event: Health Matters: Navigating Healthcare for a Thriving Workforce to share more about my experience within the Humber and the role that Fitmums & Friends have played in supporting healthcare.
Fifteen years ago, an invitation to other parents to come and meet me for a run resulted in what is now a firmly-established charity with a footprint across Yorkshire and the Humber supporting more than 1,000 individuals: Fitmums & Friends. A volunteer workforce supports men, women and children to be active through walking, running, cycling, boot camp and junior athletics sessions. Our passion is to particularly support people who struggle with or even fear activity or who have significant barriers in their way. Additional programmes supporting those affected by sight loss, bereavement or menopause are contributing to the health and wellbeing of particularly vulnerable individuals.
The impact of that first run is immense. We are upskilling people with qualifications and experience that help them go on to get paid work or simply build confidence and give purpose in their life. The connection to a community strongly supports those who are lonely and isolated, and of course the impact on physical health and emotional wellbeing is significant.
The work of our charity, like so many others, is supporting a challenged healthcare system right now. The imperative to keep an organisation like this going has never been more essential – or more challenging. We are committed to continuing our work to help local people feel happier, healthier and more connected to their community.
Sam Barlow BEM, Founder & Chief Officer, Fitmums & Friends

Please help us to develop a new Humber place narrative by completing a survey. You could win £100 of Amazon vouchers!
As we refresh our Humber place narrative we are already underway and seeking participation through tours, site visits, ThinkTanks, focus groups and 1-to-1 conversations, as well as carrying out in-depth desk research.
To enhance this work and to make the narrative representative, we need the views of as many people as possible, which includes those already in the Humber, elsewhere in the UK and the rest of the world.
Complete the survey before March 31st 2024.
