Issue 34 - 12th April 2024

Welcome to another edition of The Humber Spotlight, we are looking forward to seeing you all at the Humberside Fire & Rescue Service Industry Insight on the 17th.
I am honoured to lead Humberside Fire and Rescue Service during its 50th anniversary, serving as its current 10th Chief Fire Officer. Over the past five decades, our dedicated staff, some of whom have served an impressive 50 years themselves, have responded to nearly 700,000 incidents. Working with partners such as the Ambulance and Police services, and other Fire Services, our staff continue to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities. When I joined the fire service many years ago as a firefighter in South Yorkshire, before moving to Humberside, the fire service was very different from where it is today. Our prevention and fire safety role delivered by firefighters and specialist staff, has grown immeasurably. Their work alongside building construction changes has reduced house fires. However, as the environment changes, the risks we respond to also change and as a service we adapt to meet the needs of our communities' using data and intelligence. We continually strive to improve our approach to prevention and protection, and our response to incidents through our Community Risk Management Plan, including the investment in our people, new technologies, new training and new equipment which also enhances our staff’s safety as much as that of our communities.
Looking ahead to the next 50 years presents unlimited possibilities for how we can continue to protect our communities and support colleagues, offering care and compassion to all. Phil Shillito, Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive at Humberside Fire and Rescue Service
